Yumiko iihoshi - Small Utage Tool with Wooden Cover in Gray - OEN
The Utage Tool with wooden cover is possibly one of my favourite pieces from Tokyo based creative Yumiko iihoshi.
Each one is handmade and features a wooden cover to store and protect things inside. The wooden cover is handcrafted and will mature with age, changing colour ever so sightly. The ceramic base is purely a one off and features small marks making each one individual and showcasing its handmade properties.
In ancient Japan the word ‘Utage’ had the same meaning as what Westerners called ‘Party’. The Japanese utilised a kind of square box where foods, snacks and condiments could be stored, and the square box can be extended by adding more to the collection.
